Prejudge or discrimination of Jews- fear, dislike, persecution of Jews
Anti-semitism
prison camps that held Jews, Gypsies, political & religious opponents of the Nazis, resistance fighters, and others considered enemies of the state. People died of starvation, slave labor, and disease
Concentration camps
largest concentration camp - in southwest Poland – more than 1 million Jews were killed here – inhabitants of Secret Annexe were sent from Westerbork to Auschwitz in September 1944
Auschwitz/Birkenau
camp in Germany – Anne and Margot died here – most died from epidemics, overcrowding, and planned starvation
Bergen/ Belsen
a transit camp in Holland through which 100,000 Jews were deported from 1942-1944 to death camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Sobibor, Theresienstadt, and Bergen-Belsen

Ancient religious symbol (hooked cross) that became the official Nazi party symbol- now banned in Germany, it is still used by Neo-Nazi around the world

Nazi name for Germany and the occupied territories from January 1933 to April 1945
Third Reich
the 6-pointed Star of David was a Jewish symbol that the Nazis forced Jews above the age of 6 to wear as a mark of shame and to make Jews visible (in the Netherlands, the star carried the word “Jood,” meaning “Jew” – from May 1942 until she went into hiding, Anne Frank wore a yellow star, separating her from the rest of the Dutch population)
Yellow star
Organized movement of world Jewry for the reconstitution of a Jewish state in Palestine, now concerned with supporting the state Israel
Zionism
youngest child (13 years old as Diary begins) of Otto & Edith Frank – young Dutch woman of German-Jewish origin who keeps a diary during WWII while hiding from Nazis – over the course of 2 years, she records her reactions and feelings about everyday events inside the Annexe, as well as events occurring outside the Annexe – discovers a wealth of good qualities in herself
Anne Frank
Anne’s older sister (16 as the Diary begins)- quiet, studios, eager to lease adults- often clashes with her sister is considered talkative and rebellious
Margot Frank
Father of Margot and Anne- often called “Pim” by Anne made arrangements for family’s safety by moving them to Amsterdam and then finding a hiding place and helpers
Otto Frank
Mother of Anne and Margot- a peacemaker, often the voice of reason in the Annex
Edith Frank
Business associate of Otto Frank- arranges for his family to join the Frank’s hiding in the Annex- a know-it-all

Vain women who is hard to get along with

16 year old son of the Van Dann’s- shy, awkward, introspective boy who falls in love with Anne- Anne concludes he is weak minded and lacks character
