vocab finale Flashcards
Ecology
the study of the relationships between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment
Population
a group of individuals of the same species living and interbreeding within a given area
Community
up of all the living organisms which interact with one another in a particular area
Mutualism
a relationship in which both species are mutually benefited
Commensalism
a relationship between individuals of two species in which one species obtains food or other benefits from the other without either harming or benefiting the latter
Parasitism
a symbiotic relationship in which one organism causes harm to another, the host
Combustion
a chemical reaction including oxygen which leads to _______, accompanied with heat and light
Estuary
a partially enclosed body of water formed by fresh water from rivers flowing into and mixing with ocean saltwater
Molting
the shedding or casting off of an outer layer or covering and the formation of its replacement
Thermocline
the transition layer between the warmer mixed water at the surface and the cooler deep water below
Eukaryote
a living cell w/ a nucleus
Prokaryote
a living cell w/out a nucleus
Insulin
a hormone that regulates the amount of sugar in the blood
Ectotherm
cold blooded
Endotherm
warm blooded
Alveoli
tiny, balloon-shaped air sacs at the end of the bronchioles, or small branches of air tubes, in the lungs. where oxygen and CO2 are traded off
Vortex
a mass of fluid (such as a liquid) with a whirling or circular motion that tends to form a cavity or vacuum in the center of the circle
Doldrums
a nautical term for the belt around the equator where sailing ships can get stuck in windless waters
Lithosphere
the rigid, outermost layer of a terrestrial planet or natural satellite, made up of the crust and the lithospheric mantle
Asthenosphere
a portion of the Earth’s mantle that flows like molten plastic despite being solid (mushy like)
Subduction
A geologic process in which one edge of one lithospheric plate is forced below the edge of another
Luster
how a mineral’s surface reflects light and how the interior of the mineral may refract or bend light
Erosion
the geological process in which earthen materials are worn away and transported by natural forces such as wind or water (moving)
Weathering
the wearing down or breaking of rocks while they are in place (staying)
Deposition
the laying down of sediment carried by wind, flowing water, the sea or ice (placing down)
