Vocab- Chemical Bonds Flashcards
Diatomic molecule
A molecule containing only 2 atoms
Octet rule
Chemical compounds tend to form so that each atom, by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons, has an octet of electrons in its highest energy level
Monatomic molecule
A molecule containing only 1 atom
Ionic substance
A substance whose atoms are held together by ionic bonds
Salts
An ionic compound comprised is a cation and an anion forming an acid
Crystal lattice
The pattern of the atoms or molecules in a crystal
Monatomic ion
An ion formed from a single atom
Binary compound
A compound composed of 2 different elements
Polyatomic ions
A charged group of covalently bonded atoms
Covalent bond
A chemical bond resulting from the sharing of an electron pair between 2 atoms
Molecular substance
A substance whose atoms are held together by covalent bonds
Nonpolar covalent bonds
A covalent bond in which the bonding electrons are shared equally by the bonded atoms resulting in a balanced distribution of electrical charge
Polar covalent bond
A covalent bond in which the bonded atoms have an unequal attraction for the shared electron
Single covalent bond
A covalent bond produced by the sharing of one pair of electrons between two atoms.
Lewis for structure
A formula in which the atomic symbols represent nuclei and inner-shell electrons, dot pairs or dashes between two atomic symbols represent electron pairs in covalent bonds, and dots adjacent to only one atomic symbols represent unshared electrons
