Vocab Chapter 3 Flashcards
Parallel Lines ||
2 lines are parallel if they are coplanar and do not intersect.
Skew Lines
Lines that do not intersect and are not coplanar.
Parallel Planes
2 planes that do not intersect.
Transversal
A line that intersects 2 or more coplanar lines in different points.
Corresponding angles
2 angles are corresponding if they occupy corresponding positions.
Alternate exterior angles
2 angles are alternate exterior if they lie outside the 2 lines on opposite sides of the transversal.
Alternate interior angles
2 angles are alternate interior if they lie between the 2 lines on opposite sides of the transversal.
Consecutive interior angles- same side
2 angles are consecutive interior if they lie between the 2 lines on the same side of the transversal.
Parallel Postulate
If there is a line and a point not on the line then there is exactly one line through the point parallel to the given line.
Perpendicular Postulate
If there is a line and a point not on the line there is exactly one line through the point perpendicular to the given line.
3.1 Theorems
If 2 lines intersect to form a linear pair of congruent angles, Then the lines are perpendicular.
3.2 Theorems
If 2 sides of 2 adjacent acute angles are perpendicular, Then the angles are complementary.
3.3 Theorems
If 2 lines are perpendicular, Then they intersect to form 4 right angles.
Corresponding Angles Postulate
If 2 parallel cut by a transversal then the pairs of corresponding angles are congruent.
Alternate Interior Angles Theorem
If 2 parallel lines cut by a transversal then the pairs of Alt. Int. Angles are congruent.
Consecutive Interior Angles Theorem
If 2 parallel lines cut by a transversal then the pairs of consec. int. angles are supplementary.
Alternate exterior angles theorem
If 2 parallel lines cut by a transversal then the paris of alt. ext. angles are congruent.
Perpendicular Transversal Theorem
If a transversal is perpendicular to one of the 2 parallel lines, then it is perpendicular to the other.
Corresponding Angles Converse Theorem
If 2 lines are cut by a transversal so that our corresponding angles are congruent, Then the lines are parallel.
Alternate Interior Converse Theorem
If 2 lines are cut by a transversal so that consec. int. <’s are congruent, Then the lines are parallel.
Consecutive Interior Angles Converse Theorem
If 2 lines are cut by a transversal so that consec. int. <’s are supplementary, Then the lines are parallel.
Alternate Exterior Angles Converse Theorem
If 2 lines are cut by a transversal so that alt. ext. <’s are congruent, Then the lines are parallel.
3.11 Theorems
If 2 lines are paralle to the same line, Then they are parallel to each other.
3.12 Theorems
In a plane if 2 lines are perpendicular to the same line, Then they are parallel to each other.
