A group of people who are located in a particular space (including cyberspace), have shared values, and interact within a social system.
Community nutrition
A discipline that strives to prevent disease and to improve the health, nutrition, and well-being of individuals and groups within communities.
Policy
A course of action chosen by public authorities to address a given problem.
Public health
Promotes and protects people’s health and the communities where they live, learn, work, and play.
Bioterrorism
The intentional release of disease-causing toxins, microorganisms, or other substances.
Ecology
The interrelations between individuals and their environments
Health
According to the world health organization, a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease.
Health promotion
The process of enabling people to achieve their maximum potential for good health
Intervention
A health promotion activity aimed at changing the behavior of a target audience
Risk factors
Factors associated with an increased probability of acquiring a disease
Primary prevention
Aimed at preventing the disease by controlling the risk factors
Secondary prevention
Focuses on detecting disease early through screening and other forms of risk appraisal.
Tertiary prevention
Aims to treat and rehabilitate people who have experienced an illness or injury
Social ecological model
Focuses on the nature of people’s interactions with their surrounding physical and sociocultural environments
Cognition
The knowledge and awareness that people have their environment and the judgements they make related to it
Attitudes
An individual’s positive or negative evaluation of performing a behavior or engaging in an activity
Built environment
Encompasses a variety of community design elements such as street layout, zoning, transportation options, stairs, public and green spaces, and business areas
Health disparities
Exist when a segment of the population bears a disproportionate incidence of a health condition or illness
Health equity
Means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. This would help remove obstacles such as poverty, discrimination, and other places where people lack access to.
Surveillance
An approach to collecting data on a populations health and nutrition status in which data collection occurs regularly and repeatedly.
Sustainability
The capacity of being maintained over the long term in order to meet the needs of the present without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their needs
