Atom
Smallest unit of matter
Element
A substance made up of one type of atom. An element is a pure substance and are listed on a periodic table.
Examples=gold (Au), and Oxygen (o)
Compound
A substance with two or more types of atoms that are chemically combined. Some examples of a compound is water or sugar. A compound is a pure substance, and cannot be separated without a chemical reaction.
Pure substance
Either an element or a compound. Can only be separated by a chemical reaction.
Mixture
A substance made from elements and/or compounds that are mixed together, [not chemically combined.]
Homogenous
Well mixed, examples of this is kool aid, ice cream.
Homo=same
Heterogeneous
Not well mixed, examples of this are trial mix and granite.
Hereto=different
Soluble
Able to dissolve, examples-salt
Insoluble
Not able to dissolve, examples-sand, sulfur, and zinc oxide.
Solvent
The substance in a solution that dissolves the solute, examples-the saltwater solution, the solvent is water
Solute
The substance in a solution that is being dissolved, examples-in a saltwater solution the solute is salt
Solution
A homogenous mixture of a solvent and 1 or more solutes, examples-salt dissolves in water to make saltwater solution.
