a poem narrating a story, traditionally set to music.
Ballad
a long, often book-length, narrative in verse form that retells the heroic journey of a single person, or group of persons.
Epic
Tells a story. The poet combines elements of storytelling such as plot, setting, and characters with elements of poetry, such as meter, rhyme, and stanzas.
Narrative
a fourteen-line lyric poem, usually written in iambic pentameter, that has a set rhyme scheme
Sonnet
a poem or lines in drama written in unrhymed iambic pentameter
Blank Verse
a lyric poem that addresses and praises a person, place, thing, idea, or other abstraction.
Ode
poetry that does not have a set rhyme scheme or regular meter; poetry that does not rhyme
Free Verse
a poem expressing sorrow for one who has died.
Elegy
a line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short (or unstressed) syllable followed by one long (or stressed) syllable. Has a “da-dum” rhythm.
Iambic Pentameter
a poem set in the natural world, discussing nature, pastures, shepards, landscapes, etc.
