a character who is presented as a contrast to a second character to highlight the differences and character traits between them.
Foil
a story that has both a literal meaning and a figurative one; a story in which events, actions, characters, settings or objects represent specific abstractions or ideas, often conveying a lesson.
Allegory
abusive, reproachful, or venomous language used to express blame or censure; or, a form of rude expression or discourse intended to offend or hurt.
Invective
attributing human traits to an animal or object. Also referred to as anthropomorphism.
Personification
repetition of a word or expression at the beginning of successive phrases, clauses, sentences, or verses especially for rhetorical or poetic effect.
Anaphora
a character’s (usually the hero/protagonist) tragic or fatal flaw, or mistake in judgment, that ultimately leads to their downfall.
Hamartia
placing two things side by side so as to highlight their differences. Writers use it for rhetorical effect e.g.: wealth and poverty, beauty and ugliness, or darkness and light.
Juxtaposition
a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.
Euphemism
a common story structure in which a character ventures into unknown territory, faces conflict and adversity, and ultimately triumphs before returning home, transformed.
Hero’s Journey
the use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning (e.g., “fizz,” “crackle”).
