Vocab Flashcards
Electron dot diagram
Show valence electrons in atoms, a diagram of an atom
Ion
A positively or negatively charged atom
Anion
An ion with a negative charge
Cation
An ion with a positive charge
Chemical bonds
The force that holds atoms or ions together as a unit
Ionic bonds
The force that holds cation and anion together, bond together
Chemical formula
Notation that shows what a compound contains Ex. NaCl=salt
Crystals
Solids whose particles are arranged in a lattice structure
Covalent bond
A chemical bond in which two atoms share a pair of valence electrons
Molecules
A neutral group of atoms that are joined together by one or more covalent bonds
Polar covalent bond
A covalently bonded group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge and act as a unit
Polyatomic bond
A covalently bonded group of atoms with a positive and negative charge
Metallic bond
The attraction between metal cation and the shared electrons that surrounds it
Alloy
A mixture of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal, that has the characteristics properties
Periodic table
An arrangement of elements in columns, based on set of properties that repeat from row to row
Period
A row in a periodic table of elements
Group
A column of elements in a periodic table, horizontal rows on periodic table
Periodic law
The pattern of repeating properties displayed by the elements in periodic table
Atomic mass unit (amu)
One twelfth the mass of a carbon 12 atom, the unit for atomic mass
Metals
Elements that are good conductors of heat and electric current, most of the elements in periodic table
Transition metals
Elements that form a bridge between elements on the left and right sides of the periodic table, elements in group 3-12 on the periodic table, greatest number of elements
Nonmetals
Elements that are poor conductors of heat and electric current, elements in the far upper corner, solids, liquids, gases at room temp
Metalloids
Elements with properties that fall between those of metals and nonmetals, elements that touch the zigzag line, semiconductors
Valence electrons
An electron that is in the highest occupied energy level of an atom, the number on the outside of the shell
Alkali metals
The elements in group 1A of the periodic table not including hydrogen, most reactive metals
Alakaline earth metals
The elements in group 2A of the periodic table, also very reactive
Halogens
The elements in group 7A of the periodic table, most reactive nonmetals, elements in group 17 known as salt formers
