Vocab 2 Flashcards
Tension
The pull a nonrigid connector exerts on an object to which the connector is attached; the pull is directed along the line along the line of the connector and away from its point of attachment
Force
The cause of an acceleration or the change in an objects velocity; a push or a pull on an object
Weight
The magnitude of the force of gravity acting on an object
Normal force
A force exerted by one object on another in a direction perpendicular to the surface of contact; the force (perpendicular to the surface) that a surface exerts on an object that pushes on the surface
Contact force
Force that arises from the physical contact of two objects
Force at a distance
Force that can exist between objects, even in the absence of physical contact between the objects; also called a field force
Mass
Measure of the amount of matter in an object; the measure of the inertia of an object
System
A set of items or interactions considered a distinct physical entity for the purpose of study; an object or objects whose motion we choose to examine
Environment
Everything outside a system; all objects not in the system
Newtons 1st law
Ab object at rest will remain at rest & an object in motion will continue to move in a straight line and at constant speed unless something acts upon the object
Newtons 2nd law
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the NET F & inversely proportional to the mass
Newtons 3rd law
Whenever object A applies force to object B then object B applies force on object A; forces are =
Friction
The force a surface exerts on an object that moves or tries to move across a surface
FBD
Drawing that shows a single object with all the forces that act on the object
Inertia
Resistance of an object to a change in its momentum
