Momentum & Energy Flashcards
System
Set of items or interactions for the purpose of study, used to examine
Momentum
The product of an objects mass and its velocity
Closed system
No external objects apply force on objects inside and vis versa
Elastic collision
The total kinetic energy of the object after the collision is equal to the KE before
Inelastic condition
Total KE after does not equal KE before
Impulse
Change in momentum of an object
Kinetic Energy
The energy of an object due to its motion
Gravitational potential energy
The energy of an object that would movie downward due to the force of gravity if the object were not supported
Elastic potential energy
Energy stored in a stretched or compressed spring
Mechanical energy
The sum of KE of an object and all its kinds of potential energy
Law of conservation of mechanical energy
If no forces except NF and G, ME of a system is equal to the ME of system at any other time or position
Zero PEG level
Assigned position for a situation where an object has zero GEP
Work
Method of transferring ME from one object to another object
Power
The rate at which work is done or energy is converted
Internal force
A force one object in the system exerts on another object in the system
External force
A force some object not in the system exerts on an object in the system
Work-kinetic energy theorem
The work done by all external forces on a system changes the KE of the system by an equal amount to the work done on the system
Force constant of a spring
Amount of force required to stretch or compress a spring one meter
Equilibrium length of spring
The length of the spring when it is neither stretched nor compressed
