Denouement
the point in a story in which the conflicts is resolved
Verisimilitude
the ides that literature should somehow be true to reality
Eponymous
Hero or heroine is the character in a play or book whose name is the title of that play or book
Hegemony
the dominance of one group over another by legitimating norms and ideas
In media res
the practice of beginning on epic or other narrative by plunging into a critical situation that is part if a related chain of events
Theme
a universal idea, lesson, or message explore throughout a work of literature
Symbol
an object, a person, a situation, or an action that has a literal meaning in a story suggests or represents other meaning
Hamartia
The tragic flaw of a main character in a story, which ultimately leads to the character downfall
Hubris
excessive pride and arrogance that consumes a character and often leads to his downfall
Classical/classicism
reflects the thoughts and ideas from ancient Greece and Rome
Deus ex machina
character conflict is solved by the sudden appearance of a new character or an impassible event
Extended Metaphor
when a writer compares unrelated objects or ideas with figurative language for more then a sentence
Harangue
a lengthy and intense speech, lecture, or spoken attack
Invective
the literary device in which one attacks or insults a person or thing through the use of abusive language and tone
Flashback
an instance that takes place before the story begins that interrupts the chronological order of the plot in order to provide context or information that is integral to the text

A character that contrasts with another character

a philosophy of life that considers the welfare of humankind- rather then the welfare of a supposed god or gods- to be of paramount importance
Strophe/ anti-strophe
repetition of the same word or phrase at the end of successive clauses
