Situational Irony
An expression or statement where the meaning of the words used is the opposite of their sense
Verbal Irony
The opposite of what is expected to happen Ex. a fire station burning down
Soliloquy
A monologue spoken by a character at a point in a play when a character is alone
Roman a clef
A novel in which real people, places, or events appear with fictitious names or details
Protagonist
The leading Character or a major character in a drama novel, movie or other fictional text
Pathos
The way of creating a persuasive argument by evoking an emotional response in the audience/reader
Narrative
The telling of a story or an account of an event or series of events
Motif
A dominate ides in a work of literature that contributes to the main theme
Iambic Pentameter
A poetic meter that is made up of 5 stressed syllables each followed by an unstressed syllable
Falling Action
The action in a play or story that occurs after the climax and that leads to the conclusion and often to the resolution of the conflict
Dramatic Irony
A circumstance in which the audiences or reader knows more about a situation then a character
Coming of age story
A tale in which a young protagonist experience an introduction to adulthood. The character may develop understanding via disillusionment, education, dose of reality, or any other experiences that alter his or her emotional or intellectual maturity
Comic Relief
Used in the shape of a humorous or funny incident. It makes tragedy less intense
Climax
The high point, or turning point, of a story
Catharsis
A cleansing of the spirit brought about by the pity and terror or a dramatic tragedy
