allusion
a reference to another work that the author expects the reader is familiar with
anaphora
repetition of a word or sequence of words at the beginning of clauses, phrases, or sentences
apostrophe
the speaker addresses a dead or absent person, or an inanimate object
archetypes
an idea, symbol, pattern, or character type that appears over and over in a story (universal across all cultures)
bildungsroman
“story of education”
story that follow the moral and psychological growth of the protagonist
denouement
conclusion after climax in which the plot is unraveled and conflicts are resolved
dramatic irony
the audience knows more than the character
epistolary
works of fiction written in the form of letters or documents
flashback
a scene that takes the story back in time from the current point
