alliteration
repetition of the same sound at the start of a series of words which gives a piece of writing a lulling effect
assonance
a repeating vowel sound in words that are close together in a sentence or verse
caesura
a natural pause in poetry that usually occurs in the middle of a line
connotation
the feeling or emotions associated with a word, phrase, or thing
consonance
repeating a consonant sound throughout a line of text
denotation
the literal, dictionary definition of a word
diction
the linguistic choices made by an author in order to effectively convey an idea, point of view, or story
enjambment
“a striding over”
a smooth continuation of a sentence from one line to the next (lacks end punctuation)
extended metaphor
an extremely developed metaphor that can run through a whole work with multiple subjects, ideas, and ideas
imagery
writing using vivid description which appeals to the senses of the reader
inverted syntax
reversing the regular order of a sentence (subject–verb)
mood
the emotional response the writer causes in the reader throughout a story
oxymoron
a figure of speech combining words that have contradictory meanings
(ex. organized chaos)
parallel structure
balancing two or more points to show that they are of equal importance (similar in grammar and construction)
personification
literary device giving human characteristics to nonhuman things
