VOCAB Flashcards
Thermal Imaging
test that measures the heat flor through building objects
dry bulb test
test for ambient air temperature
cylinder test
tests the compressive strength of hardened concrete
slump test
tests workability/consistency of concrete. places fresh concrete in a cone and then removes cone, allowing the fresh concrete to “slump”. amount of slump is measured. a collapsed slump means mixture is too wet.
STC
Sound Transmission Class. Represents a material’s ability to block airbone sound.
ICC
International Code Council. organization that develops building codes.
NRC
Noise Reduction Coefficient. measures the amount of energy absorbed by a material when the sound waves reach a surface.
IIC
Impact Isolation Class. Measures an aseembly’s ability to absorb noise caused by impact to a floor/ceiling assembly.
Rebar Number
refers to diameter in eighths of an inch. (#4 = 4/8 = 1/2”)
water hammer
occurs when water flow is abruptly slowed. shock of event causes the pipes to rattle each other and the surrounding wall construction.
plumbing traps
hold water, sealing draing from the connected sewer and preventing sewer gas from entering the building.
in-situ load testing
simulated anticipated loads
compaction test
tests soil for proper compaction
tiebacks
used when clearance inside excavation site is tight, because tiebacks are within the earth.
rakers
angled wood supports which extend from the ground of excavation site up to the walls
