Q

Comparing Thick and Thin Provisioning

A

Thick Provisioning:

  • Use thick provisioning when you must guarantee that enough capacity is available for each disk at the time of creation.
  • VMs do not compete for the storage space.
  • The datastore capacity that is not consumed by VMs is wasted.

Thin Provisioning:

  • Use thin provisioning when not all the datastore capacity needs to be consumed at the time of creating the virtual disks.
  • You must closely monitor datastore capacity to avoid running out of space.
  • The datastore capacity is used more efficiently by multiple VMs.
