VMware Flashcards
Virtualization
process of creating software based representation of things (hardware simulator) to run ops systems and applications on single server. types:
- Server (vSphere)
- Storage (vSan)
- Network (NSX)
- Desktop (Horizon view)
- Application (ThinApp)
What is hypervisor
Process that creates and runs the virtual machines by sharing its physical resources. vmware product is ESXi (Elastic sky X integrated)
2 types:
Type 1: Directly run on the Physical server hardware (ESXi)
Type 2: Hosted Hypervisor- runs on the guest operating system and depend on it (vmware workstation)
What is HCI
Hyper converged infrastructure-
The “Whole package” of server (hypervisor), storage (SAN), network into single hardware.
software virtualizes the hardware conventional hardware defined systems.
What is ESXi
Small operating system directly installed on physical hardware.
Used for server virtualization
type 1 hypervisor
Difference ESX and ESXi
ESX is the old system, not in used. it had console on linux. management interface
ESXi the new system, no console, activities done via VMkernel itself. it provides DCUI (direct console user interface)
What is VMkernel
The VMkernel is a network interface between ESXi and virtual machine. provide layer 2+3 services to the ESXi host. The VMkernel manages most of the physical resources on the hardware, including memory, physical processors, storage, and networking controllers
difference Host and guest machine
Host- physical hardware (mem, cpu)
Guest- virtual machine, have their own cpu, operating system, mem, storage
Workstation
Type 2 hypervisor, on windows or linux OS
Mostly for testing applications
Allows create and run virtual machines.
latest version 15 pro.
Virtual machine
Computer software to simulate real computer
Virtual machine files
on the backend, 12 different files
What is cluster
Logical grouping of ESXi hosts.
What is VLAN
virtual LAN (local area network).
One LAN splits as if it was different ports
3 Methods:
External switch tagging (EST)- tag physical switch
Virtual switch tagging (VST)- tag before leave host
Virtual guest tagging (VGT)- tag by virtual machine
vCenter
feature of vSphere. management of ESXi hosts and virtual machine on one console.
latest version 6.7
What is PSC
Platform service controller. feature of vSphere infra.
Share authentication between all vmware products
vCenter operating system
Photon OS based on Linux.
What is SSO
Single sign on. component of Vmware Cloud.
authentication from single user only
What is vmWare NSX
Network Virtualization Software for software defined Data centre
Customers- IT teams wants to enhance and simplify network security and speed, without increasing overhead vulnerability.
Virtualization of network component in datacenter using software.
Provides complete set of logical network elements & services.
Deployed over any existing network hardware.
Main component of SDDC (software defined data centre)
Key features of NSX
SRD LVNM
Switching Routing Distributed firewalling Load Balancing VPN NSX gateway Multi site networking
Scrum
crum is an agile framework for developing, delivering, and sustaining complex products,[1] with an initial emphasis on software developmen
What is vmware
Provide various applications for virtualisation Categorized 5 main divisions 1. Server (vSphere) 2. Storage (vSan) 3. Network (NSX) 4. Desktop (Horizon view) 5. Application (ThinApp)
vmware benefits
- Running multiple operating systems and applications on single computer
- Consolidate hardware to get higher productivity from fewer servers
- Serves more than 50% of total cost
- Simplifies IT management and speed deployment of new applications.
DRS
distributed resource scheduler.
Works on the cluster level.
Monitors the workload on the ESXi.
7 layers network
Layer 7 - Application Layer 6 - Presentation Layer 5 - Session Layer 4 - Transport Layer 3 - Network Layer 2 - Data Link Layer 1 - Physical
NSX-V vs NSX- T
NSX-V: For vSphere
