VLS AND MISSILES Flashcards
- What are the four ‘cardinal’ rules of safety for VLS?
- The VLS Mk 41 is operated and maintained only by trained personnel following authorized procedures.
- A dead electrical missile interface is always maintained until a missile is intended to be launched with the exception of the procedure outlined by enclosure (1) to NAVSEAINST 8394.2F and restated below.
- No simulators of any type will be mixed with live ordnance except during highly controlled special test and evaluation scenarios.
- No Developmental Test (DT) ordnance, programs or Weapons Control Systems (WCSs) will be mixed with tactical VLS Mk 41 ordnance or programs.
- What safety measures must be used when handling circuit cards?
Circuit cards contain Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive (ESDS) devices. Do not touch edge connectors or test connectors when handling cards. To prevent damage to electrical components, use grounding straps when handling circuit cards. Wrap ESDS circuit card assemblies in Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protective covering and packaging. Observe ESDS handling procedures in MIL–STD—1686.
- What is the total missile storage capacity of the Mk 41 Mod 0?
The VLS Mk 41 Mod 0 has a total storage capacity (both forward and aft launchers) of up to 122 missiles, including missile training canisters.
- What is an LCU?
The VLS Mk 41 Mod 0 uses either two Launch Control Units (LCUs) Mk 211 Mod 0 or two LCUs Mk 211 Mod 1. The LCUs are designated LCU 1 and LCU 2.
- What is an LSEQ?
LSEQ = Launch Sequencer. The LSEQ A10 provides the interface between the LCU and the VLS missile canisters. The LSEQ also provides data processing for the module equipment.
- What is a MCP?
MCP = Motor Control Panel. The MCP A11 supplies voltage outputs to the hatch motor drives and provides monitoring and power control for the module.
- What is the VGI?
VGI = VLS GPS Integrator. The VLS GPS integrator (VGI) system provides the AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) SM–3 Missile with GPS hot start data, accurate GPS timing information, and cryptographic keys.
- What is a VLA?
VLA = Vertically Launched Anti-Submarine Rocket.
- What is the main difference between Magazine Sprinklers and Deluge?
Magazine Sprinklers are a dry-type sprinkler system and Deluge is a wet-type sprinkler system
- How many different missile canister types are there? What are they?
Canisters:
a. Mk 13 Mod 0 = SM-2 Medium Range Missile
b. Mk 21 Mod 0 = SM-2 Blk IV Extended Range Missile
c. Mk 15 Mods 0 / 1 = VLA
d. Mk 14 Mods 1 / 2 = TOMAHAWK
e. Mk 25 Mod 0 = ESSM
f. Mk 21 Mod 2 = SM-3 Extended Range Missile
g. Mk 21 Mod 3 = SM-6 Extended Range Missile
- What are the six different PHST equipment?
. PHST Equipment:
a. Canister Forklift Pockets Adapter Mk 161 Mod 0 (2)
b. Shock Isolation Forward Skid Mk 28 Mod 0
c. Shock Isolation Aft Skid Mk 29 Mod 0
d. Canister Stacking Frame Mk 5 Mod 0 (2)
e. Forward Protective Cover Mk 16 Mod 0
f. Aft Protective Cover Mk 17 Mod 0
- What is a restrained fire?
Restrained Fire is a failure of the missile to launch from the cell and it continues to attempt to leave…all the while continuing to burn inside the cell. It’s a bad day all around.
- What is the definition of an overtemperature condition?
The deluge circuits in the LSEQ are also activated if a missile is present in the canister and the Overtemp signal from the canister reports an interior temperature of 190 (+8) ‘F or higher.
- How many gallons of fresh water is contained in the deluge system?
With both the Gravity Fresh Water Accumulator and the Pressurized Fresh Water Tank; 40 gallons total.
- How many gallons is the accumulator tank?
The tank shall have a capacity of approximately 20 gallons.
