Vll. MATTER Flashcards
Anything that occupies space & mass
Matter
4 types of properties of matter
Physical properties, Intensive properties, Extensive properties, Chemical Properties
Properties that can be observed & measured without changing the substance.
Physical Properties
Doesn’t depend on the amount of matter;
e.g. density, odor, taste
Intensive Properties
Depends on the amount of the matter;
e.g. mass, volume, length
Extensive Properties
Properties that can only be identified when one substance reacts with another substance.
Chemical Properties
What are the 3 classifications of matter
Pure Substance, Compounds, Mixtures
4 types of Pure Substance
Elements, Metals, Non-Metals. Metalloids
Cannot be decomposed by ordinary chemical easily
Elements
Most Elements, conducts heat and electric easily
Metals
Have low density and don’t conduct hear & electricity
Non-Metal
Have properties of both metals & Non-Metals
Metalloids
Combination of two or more elements that can be decomposed chemically.
Compounds
Two types if Compounds.
Organic and Inorganic
Contains carbon, especially carbon-hydrogen bonds.,
Organic
Does not contain carbon-hydrogen bonds but may contain carbon;
e.g. table salt (naCI), carbon dioxide (CO₂), diamond(pure carbon)
Inorganic
Combination of two or more substances that are physically mixed and can be separated.
Mixtures
Only one phase is observable.
Homogenous
Formula of Homogenous
Solute + Solvent
Substance dissolved
Solute
Dissolving agent
Solvent
Formula of Concentrated Solution
[solute] > [solvent]
Formula of Diluted solution
[solute] < [solvent]
Formula of Saturated solution
[solute] = [solvent]
2 or more phases are observable
Heterogenous
Particles settle out
Suspension
exhibits Tyndall effect
Colloids
