Describe the difference between facts vs values.
Facts - Non emotive events/statements.
Values - Beliefs, Thoughts and Feelings.
What is a ‘Thick concept’.
A concept that is both fact and evaluative.
Eg/. The doctor was intimidating.
How do you assess a factual statement?
Use an empirical method to determine the truth.
You can test for heart failure.
How do you assess value claims?
Moral theory.
Describe consequentialism as a moral theory.
Consequentialism - Best decision is the one with the best overall consequence.
Utilitarianism - Morally right action is the one which maximises utility (intrinsically good).
Describe Deontology as a moral theory.
Seeks autonomy. Respects an individuals right to determine their own life.
4 principles of biomedical ethics.
- Respect for autonomy.
- Beneficence.
- Non-Maleficence.
- Justice.
What is virtue ethics?
Focus on character of the person. Not their actions.
Eg. What type of person should I be?
What are the 3 P’s?
Principles - Autonomy/Beneficence/Consequentialism.
Particulars - Capturing the situation with context. Harms/Risk factors.
Perspectives - Patient/Family/Those around you.
