what is the VLA?
A
A government agency that provides free legal, advice, information and representation. They advocate for a fair, just and inclusive society

what types of assistance does the VLA provide for the accused?
A
- free legal information (website)
- free legal advice for those who committed a criminal offence in the magistrate’s court, children’s court (general access dependent on income)
- duty lawyer services, a lawyer that could give general advice about processes or represent the accused in magistrate’s court, this is only available to those who satisfy the income test.
- grants of legal assistance, lwayer for those who cannot afford it, accused must satisfy means test.

what type of assistance does the VLA provide for victims?
A
- legal aid
- duty lawyer service,
- grants of legal assistance, for victims in crimes in limited matters. e.g. applying for family violence protection order or personal safety intervention order.

what is the CLC?
A
independent organisations that provide free legal services, has a relationship with VLA to ensure people are recieving legal support.
2 types:
- generalist clc, broad legal services to a certain geographical area
- specialist clc, specific group or area of law

A
- provide legal info, advice and assistance in cases
- provide legal education to community
- advocate for changes in justice system
