what are the rights of victims
- the right to give evidence using alternate arrangements
- the right to be informed about proceedings
- the right to be informed of the likely release date of offender.
what does the right to give evidence using alternative arrangements mean?
when victims can testify using alternate arrangements to give quality evidence, this is for victims who have experienced traumatic events.
e.g. retractable screens, video call, support person
what does the right to be informed about proceedings mean?
in the victims charter section 7,8,9 the victim has to be notified about any infomrations regarding the proceeding. The victim can choose not to know.
e.g. details of offence, outcome of proceeding
what does the right to be informed of the likely release date of offender mean?
the victim is entitled to know any information regarding release date from imprisonment as well as parole opportunities. But victims must be on the victim’s register.
