VLA Accused
Free legal information- VLA’S website has free information for all Victorians about the law
Free legal Advice- This can be by person, by video conference over the phone
Duty Service lawyers- Provide a duty service lawyer is at court that day and helps people who are at court for a hearing that day.
Grant of Legal Assistance- To those who cannot afford a lawyer, this may include helping resolve a matter or preparing legal documents
VLA Role
VLA offers free legal advice to those in need, prioritizing the most vulnerable. Services include legal education and access to duty lawyers for those who cannot afford representation.
VLA for victim
Free legal information- website has free information for victims
Free legal advice- Victims legal advice provides free legal advice for victims of crime about hot to make application for financial matter such as compensation
Duty service Lawyers- Provides duty lawyer for victims of crime who are seeking a personal safety intervention
Grants of legal assistance- limited to people applying for a family violence protection matter or personal safety intervention order
VLA Strengths
Free legal information is provided on website, through online chat rooms to everyone including victims regardless of income and means test
Free legal advice and assistance such as duty service lawyers or grants of legal assistance
VLA Weaknesses
Free legal information on VLA’S website may not enough for some people
VLA doesn’t have unlimited recourses so it must apply to criteria to ensure that it’s funding is used responsibly
CLC assistance
Basic legal information- CLC’s provide basic legal information online. The Fitzroy legal service helps educate individuals through producing a handbook which provides practical guide.
Legal advice and Assistance- CLC’S often provide legal aid such as help writing short letters for complementary forms, also can help apply for grant of legal assistance from VLA
Ongoing casework- Some CLC’S provide casework or assist the accused. This involves ongoing legal representation. Although CLC’S do not provide assistance for indictable offence
