What conditions affect Vit K absorption?
Similar to other fat soluble vitamins, any impairment in the lipid absorption process like biliary obstruction or significant small bowel resection decreases absorption. Absorption varies from 40 to 80% but can be reduced to 20 to 30% in the above condition. NB: Phylloquinone (Vit K1-plant form) is primarily absorbed in the jejunum.

What conditions indicates Vit K supplementation?
Since IVFE can be a source of Vit K, Long-term TPN w/out fat emulsion, patients on antibiotics therapy, or NPO, or w/ significant malabsoprtion.
What are good sources of Vit K?
Liver, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, peas and green beans.
What are the Adequate levels of Vit K intake?
75/75 age 14-18 M/F, and 120/90 for all other groups M/F.
