Thiamin Flashcards
Which part of the body thiamin is absorbed?
In the proximal small intestine, especially the jejunum.
What is the most common cause of impaired thiamin absorption?
Alcohol abuse.
What is the fate of thiamin or happen to it after absorption?
After absorption, most free thiamin is taken up by the liver and phosphorylated into its coenzyme form, thiamin diphosphate (thiamin pyrophosphate).
What are the key biochemical functions of thiamin?
Thiamin is required for energy transformation, synthesis of pentoses and NADPH, and membrane and nerve conduction.
What are some sources of thiamin?
Eggs, Enriched bread and flour, lean meats and organ meats, nuts and seeds, peas, whole grains.
what condition is the result of thiamin deficiency?
Beriberi. symptoms includes polyneuropathy, high-output heart failure and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, and severe lactic acidosis during thiamin deficiency during TPN
What conditions are usually the cause of thiamin deficiencies?
Alcoholism, long-term PN, refeeding syndrome, malabsorption, Hyperemesis gravidarum etc
