Vitamin E Flashcards
alpha tocopherol
one form of vitamin E
Tocopherol
no double bond on nonpolar chain
Tocotrienol
double bond on chain
Different vitamin E
alpha - 3 methyl groups
gamma - 2 methyl groups
delta - 1 methyl group
Natural v. Synthetic
Mixture of 8 steroisomers (syn)
RRR d-alpha-tocopherol
Function of Vitamin E
antioxidants
- deactivates liphlic free radicals
- retards peroxidation UFA
Vitamin E on free radical
ROO* —> ROOH
This occurs from an H transfered from HO-vitamin E to the free radical. O-vitamin E is very stable.
GPx-4
-O-OH –> -OH
Vitamin C effects on Vitamin E
Vitamin C donates an electron (H) to Vitamin E. While, NADPH donates an electron to vitamin C.
Vitamin E status
- dietary vitamin e intake
- serum lipoprotein concentration
- CYP450
- TTP
CYP4F2
meabolize vitamin E
expressed in the liver
TTP
it is present in the brain
it binds and transfers RRR-alpha-tocopherol from one membrane to another
it moves the vitamin E to a lipoprotein
