Vitamin E Flashcards
What are the properties of Vitamin E?
- Vitamin E dissolves and is stored within fats
- Reduced risk of blood clot formation
- An antioxidant (protection against Free Radicals)
- Can help slow down memory loss
What foods offer the greatest amount of Vitamin E, and what is the recommended daily allowance?
Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for 14+ year old is 15mg
- 1 tbsp wheat germ oil = 20.3mg
- 1 oz Roasted sunflower seeds = 7.4mg
- 1 oz Almonds = 6.8mg
- 1/2 cup spinach = 1.9mg
- 1tbsp peanut butter = 1.45mg
How does Vitamin E help with proper body function?
Vitamin E has been studied to enhance immune function and prevent blood clots in arteries due to the antioxidant alpha-tocopherol.
Protection against free radical damage also aids in slowing cancer, vision loss, and other chronic conditions (Dementia, Parkinson’s, and ALS).
What are the potential health consequences of Vitamin E deficiency?
People who have digestive disorders or do not absorb fat properly can develop a vitamin E deficiency.
- Retinopathy (damage to the retina of the eyes that can impair vision)
- Peripheral neuropathy (damage to the peripheral nerves, usually in the hands or feet, causing weakness or pain)
- Ataxia (loss of control of body movements)
- Decreased immune function
