VITAMIN C B12 FOLIC ACID Flashcards
two types of vitamin c
ascorbic acid- e300
or ascorbate salts (e301/2/3)
sources of vitamin c
fruit and veg and liver
function of vitamin c
- antioxidant
- required for synthesis of biomolecules(esp collagen)
- required for iron adsorption
definicency diseases of vitamin c
- scurvy
- tooth loss
- Superficial bleeding
- Fragility of blood vessels
- Poor healing
- Compromised immunity
- Mild anaemia (due to reduced iron absorption)
vitamin c and collagen synthesis
vitamin c is an anti oxidant that prevents oxidation of fe2+ –> fe 3+
- fe 2+ needed for hydroxlase enzymes
- these enzymes need to hydroxlate proline and lysine to hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine which improves the hydrogen bonding between structures
without hydoxylation of proline and lysine what happens
resulting tissue is fragile as the molecules cant H bond properly so SCURVY
which tissues are affected by lack of vitamin c
tissues with high turnover i.e PDL
how does scurvy manifest?
initial gingival inflammation–> impaired wound healing, bleeding gingival, tooth looseness and damage to PDL
who is most at scurvy risk these days
- elderly
- alcohol/drug user
- followers of fad diets
- smokers or exposed to secind hand smoking
- renal faiulure and dilaysis
- malabsorption conditions
excess vitamin c = problem?
no as excess will be removed through urine but excess chewable vitamin c can be harmful to enamel as its acidic
solution to excess chewable vitamin c tablet problem
check ph when buy
- absorbate or with buffer not pure absorbic acid
