Vital signs test Flashcards
What is the function of the Circulatory system?
to transport blood, oxygen, nutrients and other substances throughout the body to cells and tissues
Function of the Heart
pumps blood throughout the body
What are the 4 chambers of the heart
Left and right atrium
Left and right ventricle
what is the function of the atriums
to receive blood
function of ventricles
to pump blood out
right side of the heart function
pump oxygen poor blood to the lungs
left side of the heart function
pump oxygen rich blood to the body
veins
carry blood to the heart (deoxygenated)
arteries
carry blood to the body (oxygenated)
capillaries
are tiny blood vessels where oxygen and nutrients are exchange
systolic blood pressure
the pressure in the atreries when the heart beats
diastolic blood pressure
the pressure when the heart is at rest (in between beats)
hypertension
high blood pressure
hypotension
low blood pressure
red blood cells (RBC)
carry oxygen
white blood cells (WBC)
fight infection
platelets
help with clotting
plasma
carries nutrients and waste
Blood types
A, B, AB, O
Blood types
are determined by the presence or absence of specific antigens on the surface of RBC. There are 4 main types.
Rhesus (Rh)
factors in another antigen and people are either Rh+ or Rh-
Universal blood donor
is O negative because it lacks A,B
Respiratory System Function
exchange oxygen from the air with carbon dioxide (CO2) from the blood, allowing oxygen to enter the blood stream.
Structure of the Respiratory System
2 spongy like organs (lungs). They contain bronchial tubes that branch into smaller airways with tiny air sacs on the end (alveoli). The alveoli are where oxygen and CO2 exchange occurs
oxygen and the blood
O2 (oxygen) is inhaled from the air, enters the alveoli, diffuses into nearby capillaries, and binds to red blood cells, forming oxygenated hemoglobin.
