Why obtain a temperature measurement?
baseline assessment, monitor signs of infection, during labour, post caesarean section, observe signs of a negative reaction to blood transfusion, monitor those who are being treated for infection

why can you take temperature at the oral site?
a branch of the carotid artery runs beneath the sublingual pocket. the blood within this vessel is travelling to the hypothalamus
what can affect the temperature at the oral site?
cold/hot drinks, tachypnoea

breathing really fast and heavily
why can you take temperature at the tympanic site?
tympanic membrane shares the same blood supply as the hypothalamus
what can affect the temperature at the tympanic site
presence of moisture (e.g. amniotic fluid), excessive ear wax, recent ear surgery, presence of hearing aid recently
describe the procedure of taking temperature at the tympanic site?
use disposal covers, insert probe into auditory canal by pulling the pinna up and back; so the auditory canal is straight exposing the tympanic membrane.
Factors affecting temperature
fever, digestion, hot baths, ovulation(high temperature)
