Blood Pressure Flashcards
Blood pressure (BP) definition
the force of blood exerted on the vessel walls
what is BP measured in?
mm Hg (millimetres of mercury)
Systolic pressure definition
pressure produced during ventricular contraction, bigger number
Diastolic pressure definition
pressure produced when ventricular relaxes, smaller number
Factors determining systolic pressure
stroke volume, contraction force, elasticity of the arterial wall
stroke volume (SV) definition
amount of blood forced by arteries
Factors affecting diastolic pressure
degree of peripheral resistance, systolic pressure, cardiac output
degree of peripheral resistance definition
resistance used to generate blood pressure
cardiac output definition
the amount of blood pumped from the heart every minute , litres per min
Why do we take BP?
establish baseline, infection, during labour, following surgery, check for preeclampsia
hypertension definition
high BP
hypotension definition
low BP
What is BP equipment?
alcohol gel, cuff and sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, alcohol prep pad, observations chart, electrical BP monitor
explain BP rules
- introduce yourself
- explain the procedure and gain informed consent
- respect privacy/dignity
- no cuff on top of clothing
- no crossed legs
- the sphygmomanometer should be level of the heart
- arm should be supported
first step of BP
apply the cuff above the brachial artery with middle of the rubber band directly over the artery
