Vital Signs (Quiz 2) Flashcards
What are the 4 vital signs we need to know?
Pulse
Respiration rate
Blood pressure
Temperature
What are the steps of taking a respiration rate?
-make sure the patient is NOTaware of this procedure
-count the number of inspiration/expiration cycles in 30 seconds
-multiply that number by 2
What are you monitoring while you’re taking a patient’s respiration rate?
Rate, rhythm, depth
What is the normal respiration rate for adults?
12-20 breaths/min
What are the normal respiration rates for children?
Birth: 30-80
Early childhood: 20-40
Late childhood: 15-25
What is dyspnea
Difficult or labored breathing —> usually with pulmonary/cardiac disease
What is bradypnea
Abnormal slowing of respiration
What is Tachypnea
Abnormal increase in respiration
What is apnea
Temporary cessation of breathing
What is hyperpnea
Increased depth associated with metabolic acidosis
*DKA and kidney failure
What is kussmauls
Specific term for hyperpnea caused by diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
What is orthopnea
When breathing changes with patient position
-breathless in supine and relieved w/ sitting or standing
What is the pathophysiology of orthopnea
Heart failure increased renin —> triggers fluid and water retention —> fluid builds up around lungs —> shortness of breath
