Skin Changes with Aging (Exam 1) Flashcards
What percentage of newborns are jaundice?
50%
What are mongolian spots?
deep blue spots on butt on African, Native American, and Asians
What are stork bites?
deep pink areas on head and neck
What happens to skin when theres sun damage as you get older?

-caused by blood vessel fragility, trauma, chronic sun exposure, aging, and systemic steroids
What is senile lentigines?
-brown macules from old age or liver spots
-caused by uv radiation with increased melanin in keratinocytes
-its a sun induced freckle
What is seborrheic keratosis?
-growth on skin
-benign skin tumor that may be pigmented or warty
-seborrheic= greasy
-keratosis= skin thickening
-may be hereditary
-coloration changes may occur starting light and turning darker
-various shapes and pattern exist
What is a cherry angioma?
-no significance
-small, smooth, slightly raised red dots
-on trunk of most adults
-may increase in size and number with aging
What are the 4 abnormal skin changes with aging?
1) actinic keratosis (benign)
2) basal cell/rodent cell (malignant)
3) squamous cell (malignant)
4) malignant melanoma
actinic=
light
Which skin abnormality is used to describe pre-cancerous?
actinic keratosis
Which abnormal skin change is this?
-repeated exposure to UV light
-overtime the skin cells come irreparably
-damaged, superficial flattened papules covered by a dry scale
-may be blotch looking and multiple lesions
-benign, at first, but may advance to squamous cell carcinoma
actinic keratosis
What is the most common type of skin cancer?
basal cell carcinoma/rodent cell carcinoma
Which abnormal skin change is this?
-slow growing skin cancer that rarely metastasizes
-translucent at first with a depressed center
-sore that does not heal
-more common in males, more intermittent UV exposure
basal cell carcinoma/rodent cell carcinoma
What is the 2nd most common type of skin cancer?
squamous cell carcinoma
Which abnormal skin change is this?
-faster growing than basal cell carcinoma
-starts as whitish, flaky skin which reddens with ulceration
-may develop from actinic keratosis
-more chronic and cumulative exposure
-can metastasize
squamous cell carcinoma
What is the difference between basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma?
What are the risk factors for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma?
-over 50 y/o
-skin doesn’t tan well or previous bad sunburns
-exposure to coal, tar, creosote, arsenic, petroleum products
-living around the equator or at high altitudes
-overexposure to xrays
-precancerous lesions or skin irritations
What is the most aggressive skin cancer?
malignant melanoma
Which cancer arises from melanocytes?
malignant melanoma
Which cancer has the ABCDE’s for diagnosis?
malignant melanoma
