Vital Signs Normative Values Flashcards
What are the 5 core vital signs that need to be tested during a patient exam?
pulse rate
RR
blood pressure
body temperature
pain
**also: gait speed, o2 saturation, and RPE
What part of the PT examination is vital signs being tested as a part of?
systems review
What are the vital signs included in the cardio and pulmonary system review
HR, pulse rate, RR, blood pressure, edema
normal pulse rate adult, child, newborn:
adult: 60-100
child:60-100
newborn:100-120 bpm
** number of beats in 30 seconds * 2
abnormal pulse rate ranges for an adult:
tachycardia: >100 bpm
bradycardia: <60 bpm
Descriptors of pulse rate:
rhythm: regular or irregular
force:
0- absent
1+- weak or diminished
2+- normal
3+- increased force
4+- bounding
What is pulse rate
beats of the heart per minute
What is RR?
breaths per minute
How to measure RR
pretend like you are taking radial pulse
number of chest rises in 30 seconds * 2
RR normative values:
adult: 12-20 breaths/min
child: 15-30
infants: 25-50
tachypnea: > 20 bpm
bradypnea: <10 bpm
Descriptors of RR:
rhythm: regular or irregular
depth: deep, normal, shallow
Define dyspnea vs orthopnea:
dyspnea: SOB with exertion
orthopnea: SOB with lying flat
hypotensive BP for adult:
systolic: <90
diastolic: <60
normal BP adult:
s: 119 or lower
d: 79 or lower
pre-HTN
S: 120 to 139
D: 80 to 89
