Vital Signs Flashcards
1
Q
What is the normal pulse rate for adults?
A
60-100 beats per minute
2
Q
What is the quality of pulse/heart rates?
A
- The rate: is it fast or slow?
- The strength: is it absent (0), thready (1+), weak (2+), strong (3+) or bounding (4+)
- Is it regular or irregular?
3
Q
What is the rationale for pulse/heart rate?
A
- Oxygenation and perfusion of all cells/organs. Make sure that the heart is pumping enough blood, to supply the body with oxygen and nutrients such as glucose.
- To check for tachycardia (fast heart rate)
- To check for bradycardia (slow heart rate)
4
Q
What is the normal respiratory rate for adults?
A
12-20 breaths per minute
5
Q
What is the quality of a respiratory rate?
A
- Rate: deep or shallow
- Regular or irregular
6
Q
What is the rationale of respiratory rate?
A
- Tachypnoea (rapid breathing rate)
- Bradypnea ( slow breathing rate)
7
Q
What is the normal temperature range for adults?
A
36-38 degrees Celsius
8
Q
What is the quality of temperature?
A
- Hyperthermia: temperature too high—too hot
- Hypothermia: temperature too low—-too cold
9
Q
What is the rationale for temperature?
A
- To check for fever and infection.
- Hypothermia can cause the heart and respiratory system to fail.
10
Q
What is the normal blood pressure for adults?
A
- A normal systolic range for adults is 90-140 millimetres of mercury.
- A normal diastolic range for adults is 60-90 millimetres of mercury.
11
Q
What is the quality and rationale of blood pressure?
A
- To check for hypertension (high blood pressure)
- To check for hypotension (low blood pressure)
- To check cardiovascular health
