VITAL SIGNS Flashcards
Heart rate locations for pulse
- Radial
- Brachial
- Cardotid
- Femoral
When do we calculate a heart rate over 60 secs?
If irregualr
Normal heart rate range
60-100 BPM
Normal respiratory rate range
12-20 breaths P/M
Why is tachypnoea important?
Fast breathing is a subtle sign a patient may be unwell or injured
Difference between systolic and diastolic BP
- Systolic pressure is pressure within arterial system when the ventricles contract
- Diastolic pressure is the pressure within the arterial system when the ventricles relax
Define BP
Blood pressure represents the force of blood against the arteries walls as the heart contracts (systole) & relaxes (diastolic)
Normal BP range
120/80 is textbook
Pulse pressure
Difference between systolic & diastolic numbers represents the force the heart generates each time it contracts
Normal pulse pressure range
30-40 mmHg
Normal temp range
36.5-37.5 deg
Potential complications of temp
May be inaccurate in patients with small ears or large amounts of wax
When do we take a BGL?
- Diabetic
- Altered level of consciousness
- Unwell with no obvious cause
- Children with signs of infection
- Poisoning with suspected hypoglycaemic agent like insulin
- Signs of a stroke
Normal BGL range
3.5-9 mmol
