Indications for a cervical collar
A
- Patient’s C spine can not be clinically cleared AND significant posterior tenderness
- Signs & symptoms of spinal cord injury

A
Patients who are unconscious

Cautions for cervical collar
A
- Patients with pre existing C spine abnormalities
- Patients who are uncooperative

What is important to indentify in primary surgery?
A
Significant abnormalities in the primary surgery always take priority over cervical spine

Potential complications of a cervical collar
A
- May worsen neck pain
- May promote the development of pressure sores
- Makes airway management more difficult
- May raise intracranial pressure

Prep of a cervical collar
A
- Size measuring from traps to angle of jaw
- Ensure patient is in neutral alignment
- Pre form the collar by squeezing in into a round shape

Application of a cervical collar
A
- Gain informed consent
- Advise patient not to move head & provide manual stabilisation
- Remove anything that may impede placement like jewellery or a helmet
- Fit the collar (slide, position, firm but not tight)
- Record application of cervical collar on EPRF tablet

Further therapy and info for a cervical collar
A
- Ensure the spine is still in neutral alignment
- Consider placing head blocks or towels to limit lateral movement
- Consider sitting patient at an angle of up to 15 degrees for comfort or to assist breathing
