Creates a path as it moves. Straight-indicate order Jagged-suggest objects,broken glass... Curved-indicate motion or softness Vertical directions seem strong Horizontal seem calm or stable Diagonal seem unstable
Harmony
Is the quality that binds the details of the visual together. Created by balance,simplicity,and repetition
Shape
A space enclosed by line
Organic-found throughout nature
Geometric-found in man made things
Space and Texture
Space is the distance between 2 points
Texture refers to how the surface of something feels or looks
Balance
The ways in which elements of a piece are arranged
Symmetrical-the same on both sides
Asymmetrical-no pattern on both sides
Approximate-slight changes on both sides
Radial-uses the notion of a circle or wheel
Movement and Repetition
Movement-meant to show activity in a picture
Physical-is activity
Compositional-is created by repetition
Unity
Created by proximity(creating groups of objects),similarity,and continuation(creating a flow of vision from one object to another)
Proportion
Concerns the size relationships between parts of an artwork
Emphasis/Dominance
When one element in an artwork or a combination of elements,attracts more attention than anything else in a composition
Emphasis is usually a focal point
Form/Genre
The category that a piece of artwork falls into
