Visual System Flashcards
What are the parts of a clinical examination of the visual system?
- light reflexes
- visual field testing
- ophthalmoscope
- Visual acuity
- Visual extinction
What is a visual field?
Irregular, oval shape
Binocular filed is that part of the visual field, is seen by both eye
Describe the retina field?
Inverted and reversed
Upper nasal visual filed to lower temporal retina
How are visual field deficits describe?
From the perspective of the patient’s right or left
What is the Retinogeniculstriate system?
Primary pathway for visual information.
70-80% of the ganglion cells terminate in the lateral geniculate body and the rest terminate in the superior colliculus as part of textual and visual reflex pathway
Rules of retinotopic project?
Fibers from the temporal hemiretina do not cross in the optic chiasma; whereas fiber from the nasal hemiretina cross in the optic chiasma
What is the rules of L’s
Lower hemiretina, lateral of the later geniculate body, the loop of Meyer, to the lingual gyros
Pathway of vision.
- Optic nerve
- Optic chiasma
- Optic Tract
- Lateral geniculate body
- Optic Raditions
^. Primary Visual Cortex
What areas are included in the Visual association cortex?
PTO and the occipital
Frontal eye fields: voluntary movement
Corticotectal fibers descend to the superior colliculus, controls LMN of CN III
What are a homonymous visual field?
Corresponding halves of visual fields
Temporal field of one eye and the nasal field of the other
What is a heteonymous visual fields?
Non-corresponding visual fields
What is hemianopia?
Blindness of one-half of visual field
What is quadrantanopia?
A blindness of a quadrant of the visual field
