figure of speech
any word or phrase that creates a ‘figure’ in the mind of the reader by effecting an obvious change in the usual meaning of words or word order
trope
when a thing is compared or identified with another
simile
a direct, explicit comparison of one thing with another
analogy
like a metaphor, a representation of one thing or idea by something else (a brain is like a computer)
metaphor
when two things are compared implicitly
extended metaphor
when a metaphor dominates a longer section of a work

personification
endowing something nonhuman with humanlike qualities
metonymy
name of one thing is used to refer to another, associated thing
synecdoche
type of metonymy in which the part is used to stand for the whole
