the way the author sequences and paces events so as to shape our response and interpretation

conflict
a struggle between opposing forces
external conflict
when the conflict pits a character against something or someone outside of him/herself
internal conflict
when the forces in a conflict are two drives, impulses or parts of a character
exposition
first part of plot that sets the scene, introduces characters and the situation at the beginning of a work
rising action
second part of plot in which events complicate the initial situation, intensifying the initial conflict or introducing a new one
climax/turning point
third part of plot when the action stops rising and starts falling
falling action
fourth part of plot, in which the conflict moves towards revolution
