Visual Field Defects Flashcards
How are visual field defects classified?
Based on the area of visual loss, not the site of the lesion
What is monocular blindness?
Visual loss of one eye
What causes monocular blindness?
Lesion of ipsilateral optic nerve
What are some examples of optic nerve lesions?
Retinoblastoma or optic nerve glioma in children
Optic sheath meningioma in middle-aged people
What is bitemporal hemi-anopia?
Visual loss of temporal fields in both eyes
What causes bitemporal hemi-anopia?
Lesion of optic chiasm
What are some examples of lesions of the optic chiasm?
Pituitary gland tumour
Anterior communicating artery aneurysm
What is homonomous hemi-anopia?
Visual loss of nasal field in one eye and temporal field in the other eye
What causes homonomous hemi-anopia?
Lesion of contralateral optic tract
What are some examples of lesions of the optic tract?
Stroke
Neoplasia
Trauma
What is quadrantanopia?
Visual loss of a quarter of the visual field in each eye
Wha causes quadrantanopia?
Lesion of contralateral optic radiation
What is macular sparing visual loss?
Visual loss of all the visual field except central vision
What causes macular sparing visual loss?
Stroke involving posterior cerebral artery
Loss of blood supply to most of occipital lobe, apart from occipital pole which is supplied by the middle cerebral artery
The occipital pole represents the macula
