Achromatopsia
What does this disorder cause?
What kind of disorder is this?
Comparison of retina? rods and cones? absence?
Difference between rods and cones
Symptoms? (2)
total colour blindness
A hereditary disorder causing the inability to see colour
In a ‘healthy’ individual’s eye, specialised photoreceptor nerve cells namely rods and cones enable the sense of sight. in particular, cone cells are photoreceptors that allow the vision of colour. Rod cells allow for vision in lower/dim light, producing vision in black, white, and grey-scale.
In the eye of someone who has achromatopsia, there is an absence of cone cells in the retina leaving only rod cells.
In comparison, rod cells are very sensitive to bright light, therefore symptoms of achromatopsia include excessive squinting when is sunlight and extreme sensitivity to any level of light
