Q

What is perception
- the brains ability to use?
- What does the brain do with sensory input?
- what is the main idea of perception?

A

Perception is the brains ability to use previous knowledge to interpret sensory information by organising sensory input, giving it meaning

Perception interprets stimuli received by our senses

Q

Principles of visual perception
What two changes are detected by the visual system?

A

Changes in space and time are detected by the visual system and everything is processed relative to its environment in time and space

Q

Principles of visual perception
Colour after images
Types of stimuli’s?
Leads to the experience of what kind of image?

A

Prolonged fixation on a coloured stimulus followed by stimulus removal and fixation on a neutral stimulus leads to the experience of an after image of a colour complementary to the original stimulus

Q

What is a reflex action? What is its main purpose?
Is the response voluntary?
What does a reflex action control in the eye?
What muscles change the shape of the pupil in response to bright or dim light?
What are the two muscles of the iris? How do they influence the pupil? in response to?

A

A reflex action is a protective, immediate, and rapid reaction to a stimulus.

This reaction is involuntary

A reflex action controls the amount of light entering the eye. The size of the pupil changes in response to bright and dim light which is controlled by the muscles of the iris

  • Sphincter muscle: a circular muscle that constricts the pupil in bright light,
  • Dilator muscle: of the iris expands the opening when it contracts

Q

What is vision?
What kind of process is it? what kind of cues? what does this provide? Therefore it is not?
What kind of sequence is vision?
What are visual illusions?

A

Vision is the active process of interpreting environmental cues (provides a sense of sight) it is not a passive representation of the retinal image
Vision is a sequence of visual hypothesis
Sensory stimulus provides data for creating hypotheses of the external world

Visual illusion: occurs when the brain chooses the wrong hypothesis
