chapter 3
biased-scale lie
scale is not representative of all possible options
2 groups of lies from graphs
lies that exaggerate; lies that reverse the finding
best representation for one scale variable with frequencies
histogram
best representation for two scale variables (IV and DV)
scatterplot or line graph
best representation for one nominal/ordinal IV and one scale DV
bar graph or Pareto chart
sneaky-sample lie
self-selected sample; mostly includes extreme opinions only
extrapolation lie
tries to predict future data based on historical trend, thinking it will continue indefinitely
interpolation lie
assumes that some value between two data points is on a straight line
inaccurate values lie
misrepresenting sizes or shapes; using scaling to distort portions of data
when to use cut marks
when the data are very far from 0 and does not make sense to represent it. Indicate the jump in the graph by putting double slashes
In which axis do the IV and DV generally go?
IV on x-axis
DV on y-axis
guidelines for creating a graph
types of chartjunk
duck, grid, moire vibrations
