Artists can use visual components in a symbolic way to express their intention (ex: feeling of chaos in Picasso’s compositional arrangement)
Draw a sketch of Arnheim’s magnetic diagram and define how it can be used in working or analyzing a work of art
It can be used to assess the degree of balance, and or/ overly static placement (symmetry)
What are the three entities used to analyze a work of art?
Form, Content, and Subject Matter
Form

The artist’s intention and the viewer’s interpretation

The vehicle, if representational, used to convey the content of the artist
In approaching a work to critique, what is the first question I suggest you ask yourself?
What is the artist’s intention?
In a general sense define what is meant by the visual components?
Qualities used to describe art and design
Name four or more visual components:
form, space, composition, color
Define Positive Space:
That which is surrounded
Define negative space:
That which is surrounding
What is figure-ground ambiguity?
When the viewer cannot distinguish between the figure and the ground (or the positive and the negative)
Define composition:
The arrangement of imagery in a work of art or design (EX: pattern, homogeneous, coordinated, hierarchic, random)
What does scale refer to?
Size in relation to human scale or any other point of reference.
What does proportion refer to?
Ratio between any two dimensions (Ex: height v. width)
