Visual and auditory recognition Flashcards
What is perception
How do you interpret information from the outside world using previous knowledge
What is sensation
Information from the outside world into the brain
What is the visual system
Perceptual stimuli Hey that contains distal stimulus which is the actual object and proximal stimulus which is the information registered on your sensory receptors
What is the retina
Covers the inside back portion of your eye that contains neurons that register and transmit visual information from the outside world
Distal stimulus
Has a large capacity and temporary storage (Sensory memory)
What is the primary visual cortex
In the occipital lobe, it’s the first receptor , communicates with other regions
What are the three theories of object recognition
Feature analysis theory, recognition by components and Viewer centered approach
What is feature analysis theory
Recognition by distinct features (in the occipital lobe-Primary visual cortex)
What is recognition by component theory
Recognition by geon arrangement (Good at explaining 3-D objects but not letters) legos
What is bottom up processing
Building complex perceptions from stimulus characteristics (From receptors to the brain)
What is top down processing
Using expectations concepts and memory to interpret incoming sensory information
What is holisticholistic Recognition
More accurate recognizing facial features on somebody’s face a.k.a. facial recognition
Prosopagnosia
Inability to recognize faces
Fusiform face area
The specific location to be specialized through face recognition, exists in the lower portion of the temporal cortex
Four characteristics of speech perception
Word boundaries, pronunciation variability ,Use of context (top down), Use of visual cues
