Tower-Applied Visual Separation
Maintain communications with at least one of the aircraft
Visually observes the aircraft, issues traffic advisories, and maintains visual separation between the aircraft

Pilot-Applied Visual Separation
Maintain communications with at least one of the aircraft and ability to communicate with the other
Call traffic
Traffic in sight
Maintain visual
Has traffic in sight and will maintain visual - “APPROVED”
Visual traffic on converging courses
Inform the other aircraft of the traffic and that visual separation is being applied
“TRAFFIC (position), (direction) BOUND, (type), HAS YOU IN SIGHT AND WILL MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION.”
VFR On Top conditions to meet
Pilot requests OTP
Inform the pilot of reported height of tops, or no top report available
Ensure separation from other traffic
When aircraft reports OTP, reclear the aircraft to “Maintain VFR on Top”
OTP Phraseology
CLIMB TO AND REPORT REACHING VFR-ON-TOP, and
TOPS REPORTED (altitude) or
NO TOPS REPORTS.
IF NOT ON TOP AT (altitude), MAINTAIN (altitude) AND ADVISE.
MAINTAIN VFR-ON-TOP.
MAINTAIN VFR-ON-TOP AT OR ABOVE/BELOW/BETWEEN (altitudes).
IF UNABLE, (alternative procedure), AND ADVISE.
Do not clear an aircraft to maintain OTP between sunset and sunrise
To separate holding aircraft from each other/enroute aircraft unless restrictions are applied to ensure IFR vertical separation
Altitude for direction of flight
0-179 - Odd + 500
180-359 - Even + 500
Visual Approach
ATC authorization for IFR aircraft to proceed visually to the airport of intended landing
Not an instrument approach procedure
No missed approach segment
VA WX Mins
500 ft above MVA/MIA and VIS 3 SM or greater
Contact Approach conditions to meet
Pilot requested
VIS at least 1 SM
IAP published and functioning
SVFR Phraseology
“CLEARED TO ENTER/OUT OF/THROUGH SALINAS SURFACE AREA
(if required)
(direction) OF SALINAS AIRPORT (specified routing), and
MAINTAIN SPECIAL VFR CONDITIONS AT OR BELOW 2,000.”
Local SVFR Phraseology
“LOCAL SPECIAL VFR OPERATIONS IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF SALINAS AIRPORT ARE AUTHORIZED UNTIL (time). MAINTAIN SPECIAL VFR CONDITIONS AT OR BELOW 2,000.”
Authorize an aircraft to climb to VFR upon request if
The only weather limitation is restricted visibility
Climb to VFR Phraseology
“CLIMB TO VFR WITHIN SALINAS SURFACE AREA (or within a specified distance of Salinas Airport), MAINTAIN SPECIAL VFR CONDITIONS UNTIL REACHING VFR.”
Ground VIS below 1 SM
Inform departing aircraft that ground visibility is less than 1 mile and a clearance cannot be issued
Inform arriving aircraft outside of B/C/D/E surface area that ground visibility is less than 1 mile and unless and emergency exists, a clearance cannot be issued
Inform arriving aircraft operating VFR/SVFR within a class B/C/D/E surface area that ground visibility is less than 1 mile and request the pilot to advise intentions
