Vision Flashcards
What is meant by the term transduction?
The conversion of environmental stimuli into Neural activity
What information is picked up from the environment by the eye?
Photons
What is meant by “optical power” when viewing something close up?
Making the lens of the eye fatter in order to produce a clear image
Define emmetropia
Meaning excellent vision, the image is viewed clearly by the eye
Define Myopia
Image needs to be focused before entering the eye
Where does visual transduction take place and what does this area have an abundance of?
At the very back of the eye which is supported with a large blood flow
What are saccades and what is their purpose?
small ballistic movements that keep the eye focused on a point of interest
What is the purpose of microsaccades?
They eye moves the image across different receptor cells in order to keep the image visible (as vision responds to change)
Why are some parts of an image being viewed blurred by our vision?
We can only focus on a specific thing at any given time
What is meant by binocular convergence?
The area of an image in which both eyes come together in order to focus what is being seen
Name the four ways that motion is viewed
Real
Apparent
Autokinetic
Motion after effect
Define real motion
where light physically moves
Define apparent motion
Still images coming together to make motion (such as in a cartoon/animation)
Define Autokinetic motion
Light can be perceived as moving in dark settings (can explain phenomenon such as UFO’s and statues moving at night)
Define the motion after effect
Upon experiencing motion our vision becomes accustomed to the movement which can cause still images to appear to be moving
